Martha (Mert) was the spirit of JHS! How she loved the Hurricanes!!! We met when she moved to East School in the fifth grade and we became fast friends. She gave me the nickname "Ozzie" which many still call me today. We always got together when she was in Jonesboro and I had spent the afternoon with her the day before she and her daughter were killed in an accident on the way back to Florida. Her mom, Margaret, is still one of my best friends. I was blessed to have Mert in my life and I miss her.

Mert was one of the sweetest and most energetic persons I have ever met!!! I loved her enthusiasm over the Hurricanes!!!!  Our class was placed at the very back on the right side of the stage, but you could hear her encouragement for the team above everyone!!!  I will never forget the day they chose her as one of their maids!!!  The look on her face was priceless, and as she accepted that stuffed football and was escorted to the stage, she looked as if she was floating on air!!!

I loved all the bunking parties and dances at her house-- she and her mother Margaret always made us feel so welcome!!!!  I also remember her love of American Bandstand, and would rush home after school to watch it!!!

I was lucky enough to be her friend all through our twelve years of school!!!   I got to see her a couple of times when our group of friends from school would have a get together when she was home, and I was, too!!  She had married and moved and I had also!!!  I had moved to Missouri to teach, but we had moved back, and I was so devastated when I was told of her and her daughter being killed!!!

Mert, you were one of a kind, and we will all miss you!!!  Love, Sharon
